stop可用作及物动词或不及物动词，用作及物动词时，接名词、代词、动名词或what从句作宾语,用动名词作宾语时其前可加名词、代词的属格或宾格表示动名词的逻辑主体。用作不及物动词时，其后可接动词不定式作目的状语,也可以在stop后用and加动词原形。

如：The car stopped at the traffic lights.

2.（使）结束，终止
如：When is this fighting going to stop?

3.阻止；阻碍；阻拦；防止
如：I want to go and you can't stop me.

如：We stopped to admire the scenery.

5.（使）停止工作，停止运转
如：I felt as if my heart had stopped.
我觉得好像我的心都不跳了。
6. 逗留，待，留下（做某事）
如：I'm not stopping. I just came to give you this message.

7.止付；停付；扣除
如：Tell the bank to stop a cheque.

8.堵塞；塞住；阻塞
如：Stop up the other end of the tube, will you?
